They are small pieces of national storytelling, carrying images of wildlife, maritime history, northern landscapes and symbols that Canadians recognize instantly. These designs have travelled in wallets, jars, cash registers and coat pockets for generations, becoming part of Canada’s visual identity along the way.

At Canada Gold, we understand that Canadian coins can hold meaning beyond their face value. Whether you are exploring Royal Canadian Mint bullion, looking through inherited coins or simply curious about a design you have seen for years, each piece can offer a connection to Canada’s history, craftsmanship and enduring national symbols.

The Beaver

The beaver has appeared on Canada’s five-cent coin since 1937. Designed by G.E. Kruger Gray, the familiar image shows the animal sitting on a rock, surrounded by water. It is one of the country’s most enduring coin designs.

The beaver’s place on Canadian currency reflects its importance to Canada’s early economic and cultural history. During the fur trade, beaver pelts were a major part of commerce in what would become Canada. The animal later became a formal emblem of Canada in 1975, but its connection to the country had been established long before then.

It is also an appropriate symbol for a coin that has remained in use for generations. Beavers are known for building, adapting and shaping their environment – qualities that make the design feel distinctly Canadian even today.

The Bluenose

The 10-cent coin features the Bluenose, the famous schooner built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The original dime design was created by artist Emanuel Hahn and introduced in 1937.

The Bluenose became a Canadian icon through its success in international fishing-schooner races. Fast, capable and built for Atlantic conditions, the vessel came to represent Nova Scotia’s seafaring heritage, Canadian shipbuilding and the skill of the people who worked on the water.

Despite the dime’s small size, the design conveys movement and scale. The schooner’s sails, its bow cutting through the water and the open space around it create a lasting image of Canada’s maritime history.

The Caribou

The animal on Canada’s 25-cent coin is a caribou – not a moose, as it is sometimes mistaken for. The caribou design has appeared on Canadian quarters since 1937 and was also created by Emanuel Hahn.

Caribou have long been connected to Canada’s northern regions, where their migrations span immense distances across forests, tundra and open landscapes. They hold cultural and economic importance for northern First Nations and Inuit communities, making the coin’s image a meaningful reflection of the country’s geography and diversity.

The quarter’s caribou is one of the most familiar wildlife designs in Canadian currency. Its broad antlers and alert stance make it easy to identify, even after decades in circulation.

The Loon

In 1987, Canada introduced the one-dollar coin to replace the one-dollar bill. The new coin featured a common loon floating on water, designed by wildlife artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael. Canadians quickly gave the coin a nickname: the loonie.

The name became so common that it is now part of everyday Canadian language. It also inspired the informal name for Canada’s two-dollar coin, the toonie.

The loon’s call is closely tied to Canadian lakes, summer cottages and time spent outdoors. Carmichael’s design captures the bird in a calm, solitary moment, giving the coin a quiet and unmistakably Canadian character.

The introduction of the loonie also marked an important shift in Canadian currency. Replacing a banknote with a durable coin was intended to reduce replacement costs over time, while the 11-sided shape helped make the coin easy to distinguish.

The Polar Bear

Canada’s two-dollar coin entered circulation in 1996. Designed by wildlife and landscape artist Brent Townsend, it features an adult polar bear standing on an ice floe in early summer.

The polar bear became the newest member of Canada’s familiar animal-themed circulation coin designs. It represents the Arctic and Canada’s northern identity, while also recognizing a species that has deep significance for northern First Nations and Inuit communities.

Creating a memorable design on a small coin is not easy. Townsend had to communicate the bear’s size, strength and setting without the help of colour or a large canvas. The final design uses the bear’s silhouette, the ice floe and the open sky to create a scene that immediately feels northern.

The toonie’s bimetallic construction also makes it stand out. Its inner core and outer ring give it a look and feel that is immediately different from the other coins in circulation.

The Maple Leaf and the Retired Penny

No image is more closely associated with Canada than the maple leaf. It appears on the national flag, in public institutions, in Canadian art and on some of the country’s most recognizable coins.

For generations, the one-cent coin featured two maple leaves on a single twig. Designed by G.E. Kruger Gray, the image first appeared in 1937 and became one of the best-known images in Canadian currency.

The penny, however, is no longer part of Canada’s circulating coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint stopped producing pennies for general circulation in 2012, and the federal government ended their distribution in 2013. Pennies remain legal tender, but businesses generally round cash totals to the nearest five cents while electronic payments continue to be charged to the exact cent.

Although the penny is out of circulation, it remains a familiar part of Canadian memory. Many people still have jars of pennies at home, inherited collections or older coin albums that include examples from different decades. Most pennies are common, but certain dates, varieties, errors and unusually well-preserved examples may be of interest to collectors.

The maple leaf continues to have an important place in Canadian precious metals through the Gold Maple Leaf and Silver Maple Leaf bullion series. The Gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979, followed by the Silver Maple Leaf in 1988. Both are made from 99.99% pure precious metal and are recognized internationally for their iconic design and Royal Canadian Mint security features.

From Everyday Change to Collecting

The beaver, Bluenose, caribou, loon and polar bear have been described by the Royal Canadian Mint as Canada’s “coin superstars.” Each represents a different part of the country’s story, from Atlantic seafaring traditions to northern wildlife and the fur-trade era.

For many people, a coin collection starts with a simple discovery: an older coin in a drawer, a commemorative design in everyday change or a collection passed down through a family member. That curiosity can grow into an interest in Canadian history, design, metal composition, minting techniques and numismatics.

It is important to remember that an older coin is not necessarily rare or highly valuable. Condition, mintage, year, variety, precious-metal content and collector demand can all affect desirability. A worn coin may be best appreciated for its historical interest, while a scarce date, recognized error or exceptional example may require more specialized evaluation.

That is where Canada Gold’s sister company Canadian Coin & Currency can help. Canadian Coin & Currency specializes in collectible coins, banknotes and numismatic material. Its team can help collectors and families better understand the historical and collectible side of Canadian currency – whether they are researching a group of old pennies, exploring commemorative circulation coins or looking for a specific addition to a collection.
